Locks
Arrowmax engineers are all trained locksmiths, skilled in repairing, replacement or first installation of a range of locks.
What is the best lock?
Choosing the right lock is more important than most people think. Needless to say, every lock is not the same, and the difference could mean a burgled property or a safe and secure home. Because your home is only as secure as the locks fitted on your doors and windows, Arrowmax Services offer only the highest quality British Standard locks. But how safe is safe? And how do you tell one lock from another? In an effort to keep all our customers informed, Arrowmax has prepared the following guide.
Arrowmax recommends the 5 Lever BS3621
Identifying features:
• BS3621 kitemark on lock plate, visible on inside edge of door
• Hardened Steel Pins visible on lock bolt
Principal Advantages:
• Hardened pins stop hacksaws
• Hardened anti-drill plate protects the lever mechanism
• Over 1000 key variations before an identical key is produced
• Most secure lock for home security
BS 3621 Kitemark Ensures Quality
This should be compared to the Non British Standard Lever
Identifying features:
• No BS3621 kitemark on lock plate, visible on inside edge of door
• No hardened steel pins visible on lock bolt
Principle Disadvantages:
• Vulnerable to hacksaws
• No hardened anti-drill plate to protect the lever mechanism
• Sometimes as few as 100 key variations before an identical key is produced
Euro Cylinder Locks
4 pins versus 6 pins. Many only have 4 or 5 pins, making them easy to pick or drill, and reducing the security of any elaborate locking mechanism on patio doors (hook, locks, shoot bolts etc).
Approved cylinders have 6 pins making them much harder to pick or drill and offering your home additional security.
Arrowmax Recommends
• The use of British Standard 5 Lever Mortice Locks in combination with a double locking cylinder lock on entrance doors
• Using Hinge Bolts in entrance doors to strengthen integrity of door
• Key Locking Window Locks to prevent intruders from entering and exiting through windows
• 5 Pin Euro Cylinder Locks on patios in combination with secure locking mechanism (hook locks, shoot bolts etc)
• Avoid using anything less than a BS3621 lock. Many standard locks can be opened with a simple plastic card
• Avoid other locks with fewer than 5 pins, these can be easily picked and many share the same keys
Burglars recognise insecure locks and look for the "easy access" homes that use them.
Look for the BS3621 Kitemark to ensure you've picked the right lock.
